Data immutability, commonly referred to as WORM, is the ability to prevent selected data from being changed or deleted. Often this is simply a useful option to have, but in some industries, and for some data, it’s a legal requirement. Technology has advanced considerably since the days of punch cards and paper tape — the original "Write Once Read Many" media — and there are many options for storing data immutably, and many reasons an organization may wish to do so. After briefly describing today’s WORM technology and use cases, this document reviews the WORM features in Hammerspace software, shows in detail how to configure them, and outlines best practices for using them.
