Replication Behavior

Hammerspace uses Shared Object Storage Volumes (SOSVs) as conduits for cross-site replication. The system may reuse data already present on a shared OSV, or create data for the transfer. Data created only for replication is removed through normal retention and garbage-collection processing; it is not necessarily deleted immediately after the transfer completes. GIR is therefore a poor default conduit choice, because AWS applies a 90-day minimum storage duration and per-GB retrieval charges to GIR data. See Amazon S3 pricing.

GIR OSVs are therefore excluded from the replication transfer conduit pool by default. This applies even if a GIR SOSV is the only shared OSV available. If your deployment requires replication and only GIR shared volumes are reachable, contact Hammerspace Support. Hammerspace Support can enable GIR as a last-resort conduit; Standard conduits remain preferred whenever an active one is available.
