The Archive-Object-Volumes Volume Group

Hammerspace provides a built-in, system-managed Volume Group named archive-object-volumes. The group is present by default, with an empty membership expression until a GIR OSV is added. It has the following characteristics:

  • All GIR OSVs are added automatically. You do not need to add them manually.

  • Standard OSVs cannot be added to archive-object-volumes.

  • GIR OSVs cannot be manually removed from the group. A GIR OSV leaves the group only when the underlying OSV is deleted.

  • The Volume Group cannot be renamed or deleted.

  • Three placement objectives are built in: place-on-archive-object-volumes, confine-to-archive-object-volumes, and exclude-from-archive-object-volumes.

The separation between archive-object-volumes and the standard object-volumes and shared-object-volumes groups is intentional. It prevents general-purpose placement objectives — such as availability or durability rules that target object storage broadly — from inadvertently landing data on a GIR OSV and incurring unexpected costs.

Confirm that the Volume Group exists and contains your GIR OSV:

volume-group-list --name archive-object-volumes

Confirm that the placement objectives were created:

objective-list

Look for objectives named place-on-archive-object-volumes, confine-to-archive-object-volumes, and exclude-from-archive-object-volumes in the output.
